I should be asleep so that I can wake up tomorrow for school.
But fuck, this is just too good and random to wait.
Firstly, all the following is from the Bridezilla Wikipedia Page. And none was done by me. I have an account on wiki, and I really can’t understand Japanese.
More on that later.
Anyways…
Click to enlarge. Now focus on the six there. The reference, that is.
The year of infinite sadness that is. It’s my HSC year. Oh God, help me.
Anyways, I’m getting used to not having a keyboard and mouse around (technically, a way of forcing me into doing homework and study) and going on the computer with an egg-timer next to me!
I have fifteen minutes to go!
Anyways, things to come in the next few weeks, IN POINT FORM!
Some decent Film Reviews
Photo blogging/reviewing of my trip to Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory
As above, yet on the awesome concert that was THE NATIONAL!
More on my little endeavours through life.
Overall, a more active blog, to keep me sane.
Also, the MASSIVE love for my Big Day Out post is both flattering and gratuitously accepted. Never had such a jump in views in my life! Thank you my visitors!
And so, a naïve pharmacist started what was set to be a big day, pun intended, at Big Day Out 2008. After all the dramas of buying tickets on-line at 4a.m., arguing with pedantic parents on my right to attend and a huge cancellation that came as unexpectedly as the death the day beforehand, I was on my way to what I hoped would be the first of many outings to what is an Australian institution.
I recently got the album Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem. It’s such a great, beat-driven, danceably-punky album. Really, for the most part, made of music you can just dance to.
Yet the last track, New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down, really does something to me. It’s very different to every other track: It isn’t stunningly built like or a crazy party track. It’s slow, conquered by vocalist/producer James Murphy’s crooning vocals, professing the ultimate love/hate relationship: one with your hometown.
In many ways, I feel the same about Sydney. Give the song a listen and you’ll know what I mean…
There’s a convinience store close to my workplace that sells a wide array of imported candy, chocolate and soft drinks. And I must say now, I am hooked. There’s now nothing more pleasing than wasting all my cash on edible imported goods that mix the strangest of flavours, two of which always seem to be peanut butter and chocolate.
I guess it started early last year when I chose a packet of peanut butter M&M’s on a visit to Sugar Fix in Westfield Centrepoint with friends. Everything about it attracted me. Even the packaging is superior to that of Australian chocolate: the slightly papery material ensures not slippery, sweaty, quasi-disgusting packets. The only problem with any of them seems to be that each product costs within the region of $2-$3.50, creating a large financial dilemma.
Maybe there is something more pleasing. Like finally paying off my new camera. Whenever that will happen
So last night, after much reluctancy, I finally watched the latest Harry Potter film. They’re really starting to get to me, to be honest. It’s essentially the same formula, in the same sets and costumes, with a different script and a SFX upgrade. I finally know what Nick Cave means by “things your respect yet just find boring and tedious” (as was his description of the ARIAs). On top of that, what the hell are Daniel Radcliff and the others learning from this? Seriously, showbusiness is a faux reality as it is. The least a person needs is to grow up in one entire alternate dimension whilst indulging in showbusiness’ little pleasures at the same time.
That said, the movie wasn’t half-bad, which is surprising. For once they respected the audience and didn’t try (too often) to throw fan service scenes at us. I mean, Ron stuffing up in Quiddich and Harry beating up Draco would’ve been fun to watch, but it isn’t really what the plot is about. They move things along effectively without making us lose focus and without scenes that feel overtly tedious. And the actors, for the first time since Prisoner of Azkaban, didn’t feel like they were an amateur performers group; these kids show some emotion, even at the most subtle moments.
The plot is hard to judge without criticising the book directly (although I can say it is heavily abridged, for the better) and, as I mentioned before, technically and artistically it’s the same-old same-old. Maybe it was my low expectations, but the film has it’s moments and tells its own story whilst still retaining Rowling’s brilliance. If you’re still willing to give the series a go, it’s not too late to re-enrol at Hogwarts.
For some reason beyond me at this moment, I though that taking photos with a shitty camera-phone would do well at no one, but two concerts some months ago. In the end, after obsessive picture-taking through the songs I wasn’t moshing to, only the above photo was decent enough to show off on this dear blog of mine. I just love the way the lights create the silhouettes of the band and the heads in the crowd. Oh, and the fact that the name in the background isn’t blurred, unlike every other photo I have. Hopefully, with the new camera I’m getting as soon as I pay it off (just a basic Pentax Optio E40; I’m far too novice in still photography to get any crazy SLR gizmo), I’ll be able to get some decent photos
Both shows were excellent by the way. Arctic Monkeys sometimes started to protrude that “We’re too cool to rock out” vibe, but then would suddenly blow you away ten seconds after. True quality performers; they already look like they could be around for the next twenty years, probably winning their own weight in Grammys and then getting involved in their own Kate Moss drug scandal along the way. Bloc Party, however, made sure I was dead from overdose of awesome by the end of the show. Every song they played was like some sort of crazy beast came into the Hordern Pavilion and annihilated everyone in there, including me. It was bliss, even if the sound mixing was a bit off. Easily the best live show I’ve seen.
I don’t know how I developed this thing for going to see bands live. It’s certainly an expensive habit. But I think it has something to do with the sheer ecstasy and adrenalin rush of being around other passionate people, watching the person whose music you’ve idolised play them in a manner that’s raw and liable for unrehearsed moments. Or maybe I’m just trying to find an outlet for a natural need to escape the norm every now and again. Either way, this Friday is Expatriate and The Cops at the Metro. Should be fun.
Although there are still four more days till the end of this term, it already feels quite monotonous to be at school. It feels like outside the necessary acts of giving exam feedback and clearing us out for the year, there’s not much left to be done by your casual Year 11 student (outside of defending the school from the dangers of Intergalactic Evils). Mind games, shallow-yet-horribly-cunning jokes and films that are slightly relevant to what we have or might be studying seem to occupy our time these days.
Maybe it isn’t boredom that fills me, yet a sense of true equality. Probably due to all the events – good, bad and uninteresting – that have occured I have been left emotionally neutral. For all the bad, annoying, disappointing and sombre that has happened, there has been equal doses of great news. Such as a good friend getting a paid acoustic gig during the holidays, or getting a call saying that I’m going with my fellow elder siblings to see Justin Timberlake.
And that’s an example of good news, by the way. Very good news, because tickets are about as hard to get as a proper reason for any argument out of Miranda Devine. As to why a person like myself is interested in a babyfaced commercial-pop act who makes love to himself every time he moves? Well, for one, he has made some incredibly intelligent pop music. And although his voice can sometimes sound like pure masculine pain, he does have a knack as a performer.
And, at the end of the day, he was on of the creative geniuses behind this gem of an SNL clip. It’s said that he occassionally slips this tounge-in-cheek send-up of the likes of BoyzIIMen into his encores. I really hope that he does on November the 13th.
(This clip has uncensored crude humour and language. You have been warned)
So today was the day everyone (i.e. Half-The-Grade) had to hand in their Prefect forms. Some saying less-is-more, others taking the chance to acknowledge every little facet of school involvement they have. I’m not fazed. If I get in, I get in. More Power to the People. If I don’t, then I sincerely hope that the right people get in. The prefect body can actually do something for the greater good of the school, yet no-one ever notices (hence the history of it just being the group that runs fundraisers and controls the canteen line). And trust me, there are people in the SHS Year of 2008 that can actully utilise those powers for good.
Today was a better day than expected. Still quite sour over some issues. Some assessments didn’t go completelt to plan, yet the idea of just getting past this year and going into Year 12 with a fresh start and a much more free learning system is very promising, albeit that it will be the HSC year and stress is practically unavoidable. Either way, the quicker this year is behind me, the better.
The Explosion
I saw it late last night on Ten News and I must say, that in terms of easy publicity, the marketing team for The Dark Knight knows every trick in the book. They’ve already hooked all the fanboys (such as your’s truely!) with their internetviralmarketing campaigns, now they’ve brought this out for the action-hungry macho-masses. Here, they did the simple thing of buying a delapidated building and calling the press. The rest is history.
(The video has no sound, by the way. I suggest making your own explosive sounds, using inspiration from this guy. Enjoy!)
